MUSKEGON, Mich. - The Catholic Central Cougars dropped their second straight in-conference game on Wednesday, with their power play going 1-6 en route to falling to the Reeths-Puffer Rockets by a score of 2-1. Matt Herniman, Nolan Convertini, and Quinn Fowler all collected two points for the Rockets, while Nick Meyering made 23 saves on the way to collecting his 11th win of the campaign.

Catholic Central (7-5-3; 4-2) will return home to Southside Ice Arena to take on Saginaw Heritage (10-1) on Saturday at 3 p.m. This will be the first time since the finale of the 2015-16 season that these two schools have played.

Catholic Central’s penalty kill was put to the test immediately in a first period that had over 11 minutes of penalties between the two schools. Shayne Kwiatkowski took Fowler to the boards from behind just 22 seconds into the contest and was assessed a five-minute major and a 10-minute misconduct. Catholic Central was able to stifle the Rocket power play, only allowing a couple of chances to slip by and reach Ryan McClelland. The Cougars soon went on three straight power plays but couldn’t capitalize on any of them.

Early in the second period, Kwiatkowski coughed up the puck at the side of the net and ceded control to Herniman. He avoided the poke check of McClelland and walked in front and roofed it over the shoulder of the Cougar netminder and made it 1-0 in favor of the hosts just 2:36 into the middle frame.

That one-goal Rocket lead would hold until, with 5:33 remaining in the game, Fowler picked up the puck off of the draw and fired it past the glove of McClelland. It rang off the right post and ricocheted off of the goaltender and in to extend the Reeths-Puffer lead to 2-0.

Catholic Central sparked a hopeful comeback about a minute later when Dylan Stawski was sent off for a rough at 12:47. On the ensuing man-advantage, Jacob Onstott sent a shot skittering along the ice from the left point. Zach Grabowski, providing the screen in front, was able to tip it past the outstretched pad of Meyering to bring the Cougars back within one.

Catholic Central pulled McClelland with a minute to go and got a couple of chances but couldn’t capitalize.

Three Stars: 1. RP Herniman (goal, assist); 2. RP Meyering (W, 23 saves); 3. GRCC Onstott (assist)
