Athletics Update 10/4-10/16

Updated on 06/10/2022 | Hunter Myers

Big news coming from the equestrian program: Ella Rosloniec took 3rd at the High School Equestrian Team State Championships this past weekend! With placing 3rd, Ella is the highest placing cougar at state in Catholic Central history! Ella earned the most points for any single rider at the state. Congratulations Ella!

Ella accomplished all of this while simultaneously playing a second varsity sport at Catholic Central, Girl’s golf, that also qualified for state this season.

The 2021 girls golf season for the Varsity Girls Golf Team, led by Head Coach Kim Napieralski, concluded this weekend with the Lady Cougars coming home in a tie for 5th place out of 18 MHSAA Division 3 teams.

Freshman Ava Wisinski finished the two 18 hole rounds in a tie for 7th place out of 111 golfers competing on the West Akers Golf Course in East Lansing.  Five golfers compete each day with the top 4 scores counting toward the final standings.  Senior Mia Clarke, Sophomore Katie Cook, and Junior Morgan Armock all played Friday and Saturday with Juniors Kayla Pleiness and Ava Soltysiak playing one day each.

Congratulations to the entire Varsity Girls Golf Team on a great season!

On 10/5, boys varsity soccer defeated Cedar Springs 5-0 in the OK Gold Conference Tournament.. Two days later on 10/7, boys varsity soccer was defeated by South Christian 0-2 in the OK Gold Conference Tournament. In MHSAA District action on 10/14, the boys defeat West Michigan Aviation Academy to advance to the MHSAA District finals against Lakewood on 10/19 at South Christian Sports Park.

Girls varsity volleyball is staying hot rolling into the post season. On 10/5 the girls sweep Kenowa Hills at all 3 levels and two days later on 10/7, the varsity volleyball team completes a perfect conference season with a 3-1 victory over Forest Hills Eastern! In OK Gold Conference Tournament action, on 10/12 the girls roll Ottawa Hills 3-0 in the opening round of the tournament and on 10/19 they will compete in the second round of the conference tournament as they take on Forest Hills Eastern.

Boys varsity football throttles Thornapple Kellogg for a 52-0 victory on the road against a conference opponent on 10/8. In a tough battle on the road at Cedar Springs, the cougars pull out a 41-40 victory over the 5th ranked team in division 3! On 10/15, the cougars stopped a 2-point try that would have given the red hawks the lead and quite possibly a victory with 34 seconds remaining in the game. The varisty football team has clinched a share of the OK Gold Conference title, and with a victory over Kenowa Hills at home on 10/22, will claim sole posession of the conference.

The boys varsity tennis team ended their season with a 3rd place finish at their MHSAA Regional. With the top 2 teams moving onto the state tournament, the boys were very close to gaining a state tournament bid. Scores from regionals are listed below:

Hudsonville Unity Christian - 18

Grand Rapids Northpointe Christian - 15

Grand Rapids Catholic Central - 9

Grand Rapids West Catholic - 5

Grandville Calvin Christian - 5

Muskegon Western Michigan Christian - 4

COMSTOCK PARK HIGH SCHOOL - 0

KELLOGGSVILLE HIGH SCHOOL - 0

Girls varsity swim was defeated by Spring Lake on 10/5 with a final score of 87-99. It was a great meet overall, and over half the team swam or dove their season best at the meet! The girls are rapidly improving in time for the conference meet in 3 weeks.

The Freshmen/Sophomore Swim Invite was a success!

Top 12 finishes:

200 Medley Relay team of Babylon, Bocian, Richards, and Krajewski placed 7th!

CC Athletics Update (9/27 - 10/3)

Updated on 06/10/2022 | Hunter Myers

Your Cougar varsity teams are looking stellar as they move through their season and into October! Boys cross country has a chance at a conference title this month, football is full steam ahead and not looking back anytime soon, and girls volleyball is ranked as one of the top teams in the state! Boys soccer is near the top of the conference, where they are out-scoring their conference opponents 17 goals to 8! Boys tennis and girls swimming are gradually increasing with every performance and impressing opponents throughout their seasons. Girls golf has some young talent and a team that seems to surge towards the top of the leader boards, and just in time for the postseason.

Girls Varsity Golf

The OK Gold Conference Finals for varsity girls golf was held on Monday, September 27th at LE Kaufman Golf Course in Wyoming.  Seven schools participated in the 18 hole event with South Christian pacing the field with a team total of 336.  Our Catholic Central Cougar Lady Golfers came in second with a very respectable 357.  Freshman Ava Wisinski carded a 7-over par 79 to lead the entire field of 40 golfers.  Senior Mia Clarke tied for 5th with an 84.  The remaining CC golfers included Junior Morgan Armock shooting a 96, Senior Ella Rosloniec and Sophomore Katie Cook with 98's and Junior Kayla Pleiness with a 104.

The Catholic Central Varsity Golf team finished the season in 2nd place in the OK Gold Conference behind South Christian.  Ava Wisinski's strong performance on Monday gained her top scoring honors for the season with a 9 hole average score of 39.7.  Senior Mia Clarke finished 6th best in the conference for eligible players with a 44.1 average.

The Cougars now move on to State competition with Regionals slated for next Wednesday, October 6th, at Pigeon Creek Golf Course.  12 teams in Region 14 of Division 3 will be fighting for 3 spots that will advance to the State Finals on October 15th and 16th at Michigan State University in East Lansing.  The top 3 individual qualifiers whose team does not advance to the Finals will also earn their way to compete in East Lansing.

Boys Varsity Cross Country

Our boys had an exceptional meet yesterday, improving on our 4th place finish from September 8th to a 2nd place finish at the OK Gold Jamboree #2 on September 28th. This sets up a winner takes all showdown at the conference meet on October 19th. If the Cougars win, they will either be conference champions or co-conference champions with Forest Hills Eastern!

Nine out of the 11 boys competing on September 28th established new lifetime personal records. Erickson, Brian, Jeb, and Ian earned all conference points and are in a great position to secure all conference honors. Here is the link to the boys results:

Girls Varsity Cross Country

The girls had one of their best performances of the season at OK Gold Jamboree #2 on September 28th. The girls slipped one spot down to 6th place as a team but were running without our number two runner (Emma). Of the 10 girls competing we had 7 personal records and one season best time. Emily led the way, finishing 5th overall. Our first year girls (Meara, Maurine AKA Mo, Jaighdyn, Joslyn, and Brianna) are beginning to make a significant impact. One of the hardest things about competing in cross country is figuring out how to race over 5000m which develops as they get more races under their belts. Meara, Mo, and Jaighdyn have potential to make a significant impact on the varsity team during the championship portion of their season. Here is the link to the girls results:

Cougar Athletics Fall Update (9/2 - 9/20)

Updated on 06/10/2022 | Hunter Myers

Catholic Central Cougars athletics are off to a good start as we ascend on the halfway point in the season. Here is how every varsity team's season is going at this point in the season!

Girls Varsity Volleyball:

The Cougars are rolling this season with a 15-6-1 record! They are ranked 16th in Maxpreps 2021 class 2 volleyball state rankings. Some big wins on the season are against conference opponents South Christian and Ottawa hills where they combined to win 6 sets while only losing 1! Some big wins for the cougars this season have been against division 1 schools such as East Kentwood, West Ottawa, Coopersville, Jenison and Okemos to name a few.

This week the volleyball team will be home on Tuesday (9/21) against Wayland, Freshman play at 4, JV plays at 5 and Varsity will hit the court at 6!

Boys Varsity Cross Country

The boys had a fantastic race on September 8th. Everyone that competed either ran a season best time or a personal record. The boys finished in 4th place finish but were just 22 points out of first. That may sound like a lot of points but it really comes down to a few place changes in the race.

The following boys earned all conference points

Erickson Kunzler 21 points

Jeb Hillary 14 points

Brian Langlois 13 points

Ian Richthammer 7 points

Girls Varsity Cross Country

The girls had a great race with every girl running a season best or personal record in their race on September 8th. A crucial part to their success is that they did a much greater job than their opponents of being more aggressive in the first mile of the race. The girls finished 10 points out of 3rd place and 19 points away from second place.

The following girls earned points toward all conference honors:

Emily Tomes 23 points

Emma Barlow 4 points

Claire Bertrand 3 points

Next, on September 10th, the cougars went into Forest Hills Eastern for their first conference game of the season. The cougars shut out the hawks and en route to a 63-0 victory.

The Homecoming game on September 17th brought out a boatload of cougars fans, and everybody climbed aboard the ship that bolstered the cougars to a 28-6 victory over conference opponent South Christian.
