Boy’s Swimming and Diving team wins Academic all-State Championship

The Boy’s Swimming and Diving team represented Catholic Central well this season achieving a team GPA of 3.86, earning them the 2017-18 Academic all-State Championship.  The team’s score is the highest team GPA ever recorded in Division III Boy’s Swimming and Diving per MISCA records. 

Congratulations to the boys for this incredible accomplishment, and a great season in and out of the pool!

The Catholic Boy's Swim and Dive team had an action-packed State Championship meet this year.  With a total of 13 swims, 4 of which made it back to finals.

Ben Puglessi, Senior, captured 3rd place in the 100 yard Butterfly, re-breaking his team record by .46 seconds and achieving a lifetime best of 49.99

The 200 Medley Relay and 200 Freestyle Relay both made it back into the Consolation Final Heat, finishing 13th and 15th respectively. 

Ben also finished third in the 100 yard Backstroke, posting a lifetime best of 51.24.

Ben Puglessi also earned all-American Considerations in the 100 Butterfly as a result of his weekend performance.

The Cougars finished the season posting 4 school records, and placing 14 new swims on the CC Top 10 all-time list

200 Medley Relay: 1:39.22 (School Record)

200 Freestyle: Ralph Worthington - 1:48.86 - 5th all-time

200 Freestyle: Reilly LaGrand - 1:51.56 - 9th all-time

200 IM: Ben Puglessi 1:54.83 - 2nd all-time

200 IM: Eli Fetterhoff - 2:08.26 - 10th all-time

50 FR: Nick Luczak - 22.18 - 3rd all-time

Boys Swim Team Qualifies to Compete in Every Event at State Championship

The Grand Rapids Catholic Central Boys Swim Team qualifies to compete in every event at the State Championships being held at Saginaw State University on March 9th and 10th.  

Ben Puglessi (SR) will be competing in the 100 yd Butterfly, 100 yd Backstroke, 200 yd Medley Relay and the 200 yd Freestyle Relay

Nick Luczak (SR) will be competing in the 50 yd Freestyle, 100 yrd Freestyle, 200 yd Medley Relay and the 200 yd Freestyle Relay

Ralph Worthington (JR) will be competing in the 200 yd Freestyle, 500 yd Freestyle, 200 yd Medley Relay and the 200 yd Freestyle Relay

Reilly LaGrand (SO) will be competing in the 200 yd Freestyle, 100 yd Breast Stroke, 200 yd Medley Relay and the 400 yd Freestyle relay

Eli Fetterhoff (FR) will be competing in the 200 yd IM, 100 yd Breast Stroke, 200 yd Freestyle Relay and the 400 yd Freestyle Relay

Sean Worthington (FR), Joseph Felkers (SR)  will swim on the 400 yd Freestyle Relay 

Ethan Tipping (SR) is an alternate

Jacob Bocian (JR) is an alternate 

Ben Kortz (SO) is an alternate

Boys Swim team breaks 3 team records, 2 pool records and 1 conference record in Conference meet

The boys swim and dive team placed 6th in their conference meet this past weekend at Northview High school.  The conference is arguably the best conference in the state with 5 teams all in the top 10 rankings for their respective divisions.  The team set three new CC records during the two day meet. They were:

200 Medley Relay - the Team of Senior Ben Puglessi, Sophomore Reilly LaGrand, Junior Ralph Worthington, and Senior Nick Luczak swam to a 1:39.22 time to beat the former record by over a second. 

100 Butterfly - Puglessi also bettered his team record in the butterfly swimming a finals time of 50.45 to win the conference final.  He beat his time of 50.98 set last year.

200 Free Relay - the team of Luczak, Puglessi, Freshman Eli Fetterhoff and Worthington broke a 7 year old record with a time of 1:30.29

Puglessi also set 2 Northview Pool records with his Fly time and his 100 Back time (51.48) where he also won the conference title.  His Butterfly time broke the conference record of 51.04 set a few years ago. 

Podium Finishes

Along with Puglessi and the two relays mentioned above, Ralph Worthington also had two podium finishes (top 8) with an 8th place finish in the 200 Free and a 3rd place finish in the 500 Free.  

Fetterhoff also had two podium finishes with an 8th place finish in the 200 Individual Medley and 7th Place finish in the Breaststroke.  

LaGrand also added a 4th place finish in the BreastStroke.  

Luczak finished 5th in the 50 yard Free.  

The team of Freshman Sean Worthington, Sophomore Ben Kortz, Fetterhoff, and LaGrand finished 6th in the 400 Free Relay.  

Other point scorers for CC included: LaGrand 200 Free (12th), Luczak 100 Free (16th), Sean Worthington 500 Free (15th), Kortz 100 Breaststroke (12th)
