CC Boys Golf Team Wins MHSAA State Championship!

The varsity boys golf team competed on June 11th and 12th at The Meadows Golf Course at Grand Valley State University in the MHSAA Division 3 state championship.  18 teams from around the lower peninsula competed with the Cougars coming out on top with a team score of 623, outpacing the Cardinals of Big Rapids and the Comets of Hanover Horton who both came in at 640.  Rounding out the top 5 included Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard (649) and University Liggett (649).

On Friday, the Cougars were led by Freshman Matthew Sokorai who carded an impressive 1 over par 73 which was tied for 4th as the best round of Day 1.  Freshman Will Preston followed with a 77 and Senior Andrew Armock and Junior Johnny Harmon both finished with 78's.  Luke Preston came in with an 84 during a round that included extremely hot and humid conditions for all 108 competitors.  CC's day 1 team total of 306 provided the Cougars with a 14 stroke advantage over Big Rapids at 320.

Saturday's conditions were slightly improved from Friday, but by the end of the day high temperatures and humidity definitely challenged the entire field.  The CC golfers again led the field with the lowest team score (317) with Senior Thomas Grile finishing with a 6-over par 78 which was also matched by Freshman Will Preston.  Senior Andrew Armock was next with a 79, followed by Junior Johnny Harmon and Freshman Andrew Sokorai both with 82's.

The two day total of 623 was enough to secure the school's first golf championship and head Coach Kim Napieralski and all of the CC golfers should be proud of this amazing accomplishment!

GO COUGARS!!!
